Rules & Freedom – Rev William Orr
When we look at the ten commandments, many of us misinterpret these and consider them to be like a turnstile that we pass through in order to enter into heaven or into the presence of God. When the commandments were given to Moses the covenant had already been cut with God’s people and as such, they cannot act as a gateway to something that has already been given. In this sermon, Rev William Orr considers the Israelite’s identity and the role of the commandments as a ‘baby harness’ – allowing God’s people to be close to the heart of God. We are asked to consider these ten statements as an expression of what it means to belong to God rather than simply as a set of rules that restrict the way we live our lives.
